What We Do

1. We finance the cost of surgical and medical treatment, in Perth, for disadvantaged children referred by SACIM in Mauritius.

In Mauritius, children referred to SACIM are examined by a panel of doctors who decide which cases need surgical treatment overseas. SACIM contact COMMSSA’s Medical Directors who, in turn, assess whether treatment in Australia is indicated, possible and affordable. Once a case is accepted, the Medical Directors of COMMSSA organise treatment by appropriate specialists in hospitals in Perth.

2. We provide financial assistance towards the costs of surgical and medical treatment for disadvantaged Mauritian children in private hospitals in Mauritius or, at times, elsewhere.

In 2016 Dr Kevin Teerovengadum (paediatric surgeon) and Dr Ryad Joomye (Paediatrician and intensivist) turned to us requesting financial assistance for the treatment of needy children in private hospitals in Mauritius. They provide first class paediatric care at Wellkin (now C-Care) Hospital in Moka and Clinique Fortis Darné, in Curepipe. Their team also includes Dr François Leung, Paediatrician, Dr Mohamed L’Kaissi, an  orthopaedic surgeon from Réunion island, and Dr Reebye, cardiologist.

3. We facilitate Specialist Nurse Education programs in Mauritius

In 2017, the Medical Directors, Dr Serge Toussaint and Dr Mariam Bahemia, became aware of the need for improved stoma care for children operated on in Mauritius.

COMMSSA has instigated and financed introductory Specialist Nurse education Programs in the areas of stoma and wound care in Mauritius in 2018, and in Mauritius and Rodrigues in 2019.

Mrs Elizabeth English AM, and Ms Sharon Boxall, nurse educators from Australia, conducted those education programs with the approval of The Nursing Council of Mauritius and of the Health Commissioner in Rodrigues.
