The Australian Medical Student Association ( AMSA) extended an invitation to Dr Serge Toussaint and I, to collaborate and participate in the Global Health Conference in Perth. The AMSA GHC was established in 2005 and is the premier academic event bringing together medical students across Australia to explore the complexities of global health issues and turn compassion into tangible action.
We were excited and honoured to be invited, and to take the opportunity to meet aspiring medical professionals who are passionate about impacting the course of health advocacy in the medical field and beyond.
Serge and I were asked to develop and present a hands-on interactive workshop that would give the young delegates an opportunity to up-skill and learn some practical skills in order to effect change.
Together, we outlined the work of COMMSSA over it’s 30 years, from it’s beginnings to the way it has continued to make a difference and adapt to the needs of children in Mauritius. By outlining the legal and practical requirements of establishing a charity, we were able to empower the students with skills and knowledge to consider setting up their own charity and make their dreams a reality.
We left the session feeling confident that the students not only enjoyed learning about the work of COMMSSA , but that they themselves are now equipped with ideas, inspiration and knowledge.
